Today's Poem/Short Story Prompt: The Word "News"

This blog is devoted to a select group of poets. We're starting with poets from the Ann Arbor area, but, hey, if you're from Detroit, Grand Rapids, Saginaw or the Upper Peninsula, then that is okay, too.

Our goal is to provide you with a prompt every day from which you are to garner inspiration and submit a poem. How to submit will be very easy.  Just put your poem or short story  in the comments section and hit post. You may not immediately see your post, but it is there under the "Comments" section. You may need to click on "Comments" to see your poem.  It is there, alive and well, on another page.

You may need to have a Gmail account to post in the comments section.  Most of you do have Gmail, but for those of you that don't it's extremely worthwhile to open up one now!  That way you've got a chance to get your work out there in the world.

Today's poem or short story prompt is the word "News."

  1. Slow News Day

    My hair needs trimming
    The bills are caught up
But my car makes a worrisome noise
    Not a happy sound
Always money leaving my sad castle of pennies
    An overweight man walks precariously
In front of my living room window
    He totters
(How rarely people use this word)
I predict a stroke in his near future
Unfortunately I'm good at that kind of thing
    It's almost midnight
    The presses stopped hours ago

Don't talk about the news. Don't talk
about the news. The word "coffee" has
a double consonant and a double noun.
"cappuccino" has a pair of double consonants.
"caffe macchiato" has a pair of
    double consonants but it's
two words. So, does that count?

Maybe inviting him for coffee wasn't the
smartest thing in the world. Maybe he doesn't
like coffee. No. I saw him, he was having coffee
with his friends. No. I'm sure he likes coffee.

North, South, East, West. That doesn't spell
anything. North, East, West, South would spell
"news". What else could I make of the word
    "news"?

I'm going to run out of things
to talk about. We don't really have
that much in common. This was a stupid
idea. If he wanted to get together, he
    would have said something.

If you turn the word backwards, you get
"swen". That a name, isn't it? No, that's
"Sven". Chekov - not Anton, Anton
    spelled Chekhov with an 'h',
Pavel (Chekov without an 'h') - would
pronounce 'west' with a 'v'. Yeah.
    South, Vest, East, North. Pavel
    would call him "Sven".

Don't talk about the news. Don't
talk about the news. He's not coming.
Don't talk about the news. Don't talk
about the news. He's not coming.
    Don't talk about the news.
