Today's Poem or Story Prompt: The Word "Cancer"

This blog is devoted to a select group of poets.  We're starting with poets from the Ann Arbor area, but, hey, if you're from Detroit, Grand Rapids, Saginaw or the Upper Peninsula than that is okay, too.

Our goal is to provide you with a prompt every day from which you are to garner inspiration and submit a poem. How to submit will be very easy.  Just put your poem or short story  in the comments section and hit post. You may not immediately see your post, but it is there under the "Comments" section. You may need to click on "Comments" to see your poem.  It is there on another page.

You may need to have a Gmail account to post in the comments section.  Most of you do have Gmail, but for those of you that don't it's extremely worthwhile to open up one now!  That way you've got a chance to get your work out their in the world.

Today's poem or short story prompt is the word "Cancer"

  1. Cancer

    A little inside everyone
    One cell happy
    Eager to play outside
    Run to the park
    Ride on the swing
    The sun warming your skin
Like the sun used to do many years ago
Before we knew its hurtful ways
    How it could turn rabid
Wander sick through our alarmed town
While everyone waited for the sheriff
To put the poor thing down

  2. Cancer

    Everything is dark
The sounds are sharp and piercing
I want to find a warm bed
     and curl up
     for a long
     long
     time

    Yesterday was brighter

There was a tiny thought in the back of my head
    When I woke up

    It grew
    It grew
    It spread
The dark thoughts consume the happy thoughts

    No! Really!

    The thing is
    I wonder if
It works the other way too

    Can I Reverse Warburg myself
    Into being flooded
    By happiness cells?

    Your eyes on this
    Might start the reaction

    Stare harder
    Please
