Today's Poem or Short Story Prompt: The Word "Community"

This blog is devoted to a select group of poets. We're starting with poets from the Ann Arbor area, but, hey, if you're from Detroit, Grand Rapids, Saginaw or the Upper Peninsula, then that is okay, too.  We've even been so generous to accept poets from other parts of the USA and the entire country of Canada!

Our goal is to provide you with a prompt every day from which you are to garner inspiration and submit a poem. How to submit will be very easy.  Just put your poem or short story  in the comments section and hit post. You may not immediately see your post, but it is there under the "Comments" section. You may need to click on "Comments" to see your poem.  It is there on another page.

You may need to have a Gmail or Yahoo or AOL account to post in the comments section.  Most of you do have Gmail or Yahoo or AOL, but for those of you that don't, it's extremely worthwhile to open up one of these email accounts now!  This way you've got a chance to get your work out there in the world.

Today's poem or short story prompt is the word "community."

  1. Community

The short-haired black dog with no tail
    Walks alone among the trailers
Ferns grow in the empty lots
    Where mobile homes once stood
The dog wears a collar and tags
    He looks well-fed
    I call "Here, Boy"
    and "Here, Girl"
    He continues on
Is he deaf or ignoring me?
He might have been bred to root out rats
    Or collect dead water fowl
His IQ that of a one and half year old child
    Yet it hurts
He, this dog, does not need or acknowledge me

  2. THE AFTERNOON SESSION

    There are two empty seats
    near the front (as always)
    I consider taking one,
    but the move
from the back of the room
    to the middle
is enough risk for one day.

    Over coffee this morning
    I asked whether or not
anyone had pictures of their kids.
As the pictures went around the table
accompanied by names I knew I wouldn't remember
Someone said they appreciated being asked.

    At dinner last night,
Ruth said she liked my question
    to the morning speaker.

    This is uncharted territory
I need a compass and map
so I don't wander into the areas
where these things are not allowed.

so I don't wanter back into the areas
where these things are not allowed.
