(Friday's) Poem or Short Story Prompt: The Word "dancing"

This blog is devoted to a select group of poets. We're starting with poets from the Ann Arbor area, but, hey, if you're from Detroit, Grand Rapids, Saginaw or the Upper Peninsula, then that is okay, too.

Our goal is to provide you with a prompt every day from which you are to garner inspiration and submit a poem. How to submit will be very easy.  Just put your poem or short story  in the comments section and hit post. You may not immediately see your post, but it is there under the "Comments" section. You may need to click on "Comments" to see your poem.  It is there on another page.
You may need to have a Gmail account to post in the comments section.  Most of you do have Gmail, but for those of you that don't it's extremely worthwhile to open up one now!  That way you've got a chance to get your work out there in the world.

Today's poem or short story prompt is the word "dancing"

(note: this week's posts by Mike are dedicated to the Harry Potter Alliance http://thehpalliance.org/ a group of dedicated mostly-Muggles doing good in the world. See you at Misti Con this weekend.)

  1. Florida Retirement Community Clubhouse

    Friday evenings
    The clubhouse materializes into
A lounge for the sixty five and up set
    Grasshoppers Brandy Alexanders Manhattans
    Beer poured into chilled glasses
    Dresses and sports jackets
Men not afraid to ask women to dance
Women never turn down an offer
    Men lead and women follow
    Until the pace picks up
    Twist Swim Hustle
    A band that plays requests
I dare you to tell me
You are having as much fun

  2. draft 2:

    you and me
    we do a waltz
    we taught it
      to each other
    it grew slowly
    like a child
    over many years
    and many homes
    and jobs
    and trips to the beach
    and trips to the doctor
    and trips to the counselors
who seem not to be able to dance
      at least not very well
      not very well at all

    the dance child
looks up at us and wonders
when the music is going to start again

it can come from almost anywhere
it can start at almost any time
it can end at almost any time
it can tell almost any story
      or refuse to talk

we have steps for nearly every occasion
some get danced more than others
some have worn holes in the floor
    some are like new shoes
      still in the box
      waiting to be used

    the dance child
    doesn't notice,
    isn't aware, that
    we dance all the time

    ---

    women and men
    line the walls
    listening to the music
    swaying
    in one place

    sometimes
    sometimes
    a foot would tap
    or someone would shuffle
    a tall man
    noticed I was looking
    he looked away
    to the right
    we're guys
    he knows
    I won't say anything
