Today's (Tuesday) Poem or Short Story Prompt: The Word "Fallen"

This blog is devoted to a select group of poets. We're starting with poets from the Ann Arbor area, but, hey, if you're from Detroit, Grand Rapids, Saginaw or the Upper Peninsula, then that is okay, too.

Our goal is to provide you with a prompt every day from which you are to garner inspiration and submit a poem. How to submit will be very easy.  Just put your poem or short story  in the comments section and hit post. You may not immediately see your post, but it is there under the "Comments" section. You may need to click on "Comments" to see your poem.  It is there on another page.

You may need to have a Gmail or Yahoo account to post in the comments section.  Most of you do have Gmail or Yahoo email, but for those of you that don't it's extremely worthwhile to open up an account now!  That way you've got a chance to get your work out there in the world.

  1. In The Rain

    they stand
    in the rain
    motionless
    nineteen of them
    stainless steel
    each over seven feet tall
    watching for something

    they will watch forever

    we stand there
    in the rain
    three of us
    flesh and blood
    and freedom
it's cold so we go back to the car

    because we can

    duty done, airplanes and paperwork
brought at least one of them
    back to Detroit
    to do what he could
    for the neighborhood kids
making art with clay and punch cards
and building a robot (shhh, don't tell,
    it's just a refrigerator box
    painted silver)

later, he would buy a coffin
    to scare the trick-or-treaters
    and an amplifier from Sears
    so I could be heard
    over the drums

    he never talked about it,
    my dad,
    not that I remember.
    now, 54,246 bodies
    and 60-some later,
we hear noises and see shadows
    and look around
    wearily
    for new answers
    to very, very old questions

    The Average precipitation
    in depth (mm per year)
    was 1054
    in 2009

    it's still raining
